Cat fleeing apartment fire walks away unscathed after jumping five floors

Cats are experts at falling — and a video of one jumping from a burning building in Chicago proves how good they are landing on their feet.

Footage taken by firefighters at the scene showed the smoking apartment building, with the windows on its fifth floor smashed and broken from the flames.

The black cat is seen in the right of the video, peering out the open window and considering the jump.

The cat then tests the side of the window with his paw and appears to think about trying to run down the side of the building.

When it realises that isn’t an option, it leaps, letting out a loud “meow” while in freefall.

Horrified onlookers screamed as the cat plunged the five floors from the window.

The feline just misses a concrete fence surrounding the apartment building before it lands on the grass, bouncing once before running away, apparently unscathed.

The Chicago Fire Department also couldn’t believe the cat survived, posting the footage of the daredevil animal and suggesting it had still kept its nine lives.

“It went under my car and hid until she felt better after a couple of minutes and came out and tried to scale the wall to get back in,” fire department spokesman Larry Langford said.
